President’s Message
I had the privilege of presenting a special award of thanks to a special individual at our last club meeting. This man has given his heart and soul to the growth and enhancement of our Atlantic Beach Shag Club. I know I represent the hearts of all our club members in thanking Bill Guthrie for his fine leadership as past President of the ABSC. Thank you so much Bill for all you have accomplished and your continued support of our club.
This also is an appropriate time to thank Sheila Wainright, chairperson of our social committee. The Beach Event was simply a super success as we had a record attendance. I know the vacationers around us were belly laughing as much as we were at the competitive events sponsored. While “none” of these events will ever be seen in the Olympics, they supplied our members with a lot of sunny fun.
As liaison of the ABSC to Memories, Frances Pittman gave her report to our membership identifying key areas our club can provide support to Memories. Frances has a committee of three including Joy Merritt and myself who will meet Monday August 16th to prioritize and engage this initiative formally. We will guide our club culture going forward to continually support all areas that Donnie Hinson related to Frances.
As we constantly promote the shag dance, to balance our club mission we also strive to be a leader in our community supporting local charitable initiatives. I have scheduled an initial meeting with a group from our club and Memories to hear Tommy Smith of the Raleigh Shag Club give a presentation as to how his club has been so successful supporting the Hospice Program of Raleigh. We have a great opportunity in Carteret County for such a need, as Carteret General Hospital is engaged in building a state of the art radiation oncology center to treat local cancer patients. Our club has the right membership components to be successful in establishing and driving this wonderful opportunity. A full report will be given at our next meeting to decide if our club, along with Memories, wishes to move forward with this program.
Going forward, the ABSC will continuously invite area shag clubs to attend appropriate events of the ABSC. This not only promotes the dance, but also promotes our continued support to Memories Beach Club. This last announcement is posted on our ABSC website. The Twin Rivers Shag Club is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Fred Anders Amateur Shag Contest at Attitudes Bar and Grill Saturday, October 16th, 2010. Contact LaVerne Mozingo 252-240-3728 lpm1945@ec.rr.com to support our neighbor shag club.

August Social Report
We had a record attendance at the “Flip, Flop and Fly” Surfside Picnic on Saturday, August 14th. There was something for everyone. It was a day filled with fun, food and laughter accompanied by great music. Everyone walked away with a pair of flip flops, compliments of Rebecca and Ted Blaylock.
We had 8 tents set up for those who wanted to sit in the shade and there was plenty of sunshine for those working on their tans. Ted Harrell graciously provided his Corn Hole game for entertainment. There was plenty of “smack” talking among those waiting to play.
Before we let the games begin, we had subs with all the fixin’s, followed by a variety of homemade dessert bars.
The winner of the Men’s Hula Contest was Mel Hoard. He was the recipient of a rod and reel for a job well done. We all knew Mel had some moves on the dance floor and they paid off at the beach!
Debbie Wilkins won the Women’s Hula Contest round and was awarded a gorgeous purple handbag for her outstanding performance. She was definitely feeling the music!
Linda Butler and Ted Harrell teamed up against Frances Pittman and Marie Savage, Tommy’s sister, who was visiting, in the Toilet Plunger Relay. Linda and Ted were the winners but due to their valiant efforts Frances and Marie also claimed a prize. It is probably a good thing that there are no pictures of this event. If you weren’t there you missed it!
Carol Seymour won a prize from Edgewater Linens for the “First in, First Out”, Run for the Ocean Race. Carol managed to come in first after being rescued by partner in crime, Debbie Wilkins.
Thanks to the many hands that made this a fun event. Special thanks go to Rebecca Blaylock for soliciting the prizes from the various local businesses. The prizes were first rate and appreciated by all and enhanced this party for all that attended.
If you have an opportunity to frequent any of the following local businesses, we ask that you stop and thank them for their support of the ABSC.
They are:
Bob Hill’s Hardware Noelle Purses Todd Walk
Beachcombers Beach Outfitters 4 Corners Diner
Flip Flops Freeman’s Bait Edgewater Linens
Island Cuts Day Spa Island Furniture Island Traders
Monkey Bar Rudy’s Corner Watermark
We are already working on our next event, scheduled to be held on September 11, 2010, from 5-8 at Memories. We are planning a SOS Preparedness Party with the music of Henry Gray being featured. A Shag dance step will be taught so that those attending can “put it on the floor” at SOS. Twin Rivers and Eastern North Carolina Shag Clubs are being invited to join us for this social. We anticipate a great crowd.
Please be on the lookout for the September flyer, which we will be emailing to those whose address we have, in the next few days. If you did not receive an email flyer last month, please contact, sheilawainright@yahoo.com and advise your email address and we will get you added to the distribution list.
